Don’t Work from Home. Try a Coffee Shop Instead!

We all learnt this during the pandemic. Your home can be an office. That’s convenient enough… You can sleep in a bit later, no commute, it’s cheap… etc. etc. But sometimes working from home turns out being not quite the blast it’s supposed to be. But fear not, my friends. I’m here to offer a juicy alternative.

Picture this: you’re in a place that encourages productivity, surrounded by people busy doing the same as you. Except you don’t know them and don’t have to talk to them unless you want to. And you can have coffee, breakfast, maybe even lunch! Without having to do the dishes. Throw in some good music and lots of natural light, and you got a pretty awesome working environment in my books. Not to mention a reason to actually shower and get dressed in the morning!

That’s right: working remotely from a coffee shop can be the ideal middle ground between the lonely (or potentially kid and spouse infested) a-tad-too-homey environment of your dining table turned office, and the actual office, where you have to interact with your incompetent boss and that insufferable colleague. You know exactly who I’m talking about. If you haven’t tried it before, it’s like a whole new world of possibilities opening up.

Sold yet? Good. But before you grab your laptop and head to the nearest coffee joint, let’s explore the ups and downs of this funky office setup.

First off, the perks of cafe office life are pretty sweet. You get to pick your ideal spot – and thanks to our, dare I say, fantastic website you can find a place with specialty coffee, lots of natural light, and flash-fast internet speed. It’s an environment that’s not just conducive but downright energizing for your work.

But here’s the real game-changer: people. Often people working, just like you. Sure, working from your living room has its perks, but sometimes it can feel like you’re in a productivity bubble. Cafes break that bubble. You can chat, laugh, and share a coffee break with fellow humans, offering a refreshing change from the solo work routine. Of course you could do that from a co-working space as well, and if you have the money to invest in it, you absolutely should. Laptop-friendly cafes are simply the budget version.

Now, before you pack up your stuff and set up shop at your local coffee haven, let’s talk about the not-so-pleasant aspects. First on the list: noise. Some cafes are serene oases, but others might as well be hosting a rock concert. Concentrating or making that important call can be a serious challenge. And let’s not forget the crowds – finding a quiet corner may be trickier than you think.

Then there’s the financial side of things. Yeah, grabbing a cup of joe might be pocket change, but the allure of that tempting snack menu can lead to an unexpectedly hefty bill. For those on a tight budget, this could be a deal-breaker.

Last but not least, security. Café Wi-Fi isn’t exactly Fort Knox. There’s a risk of exposing your precious data to cyber miscreants. And leaving your laptop unattended? That’s like waving a “free stuff” flag.

Fortunately, we’re here to guide you to address each and every one of those challenges. Check out our upcoming posts for more on:

  • how to “enjoy the silence” Depeche-mode style even in a noisy coffee shop
  • how to keep a good posture wherever you work

and much more!

Till then, happy café working!
